Silence

Vicente Forte

, 1968

Oil on canvas, 85 × 300cm.

In this particular port landscape, the influence of Cubism is evident in the manner in which the forms of the boats, nets and sails are dismembered. The warm gamut of colors covers a spectrum of oranges that receive the impact of blue, green, black and ochre. Forte maintains the basic structure of the fishing boats anchored in the port without completely dismantling the forms. The work’s title, Silencio (Silence), refers to the atmosphere of the port, bathed in crepuscular, saffron-colored light; the elongated format recreates a horizon that is hidden by the boats. In accordance with the premises of Cubism, the grouping of this maritime spectacle seems to be pressed flat under a pane of glass, situated into a single plane.
